2020 SCPA Annual Meeting & Awards
Rescheduled due to COVID-19 | Registration Deadline: Sept. 9
SCPA postpones SCPA Annual Meeting until Sept. 18-19
Due to the ongoing threat posed by COVID-19, the 2020 SCPA Annual Meeting & Awards, set for March 20-21, has been rescheduled for Sept. 18-19. The convention will still be held at The Marina Inn at Grande Dunes in Myrtle Beach.
We’re concerned for the health and welfare of the 200+ members registered for the Annual Meeting, as well as our industry’s ability to function as the primary news and information sharers in nearly every community across South Carolina. If anyone were to get sick because of our meeting, it would impair the newspaper’s ability to deliver news to the community.
Below are some housekeeping matters related to the date change. If you have any other questions or concerns, please reach out to us.
We’re disappointed, but we know it is the right decision to keep our members safe. We look forward to seeing you and celebrating your wins in September at the beach!

If you’ve registered to attend the Annual Meeting (originally set for March 20-21), your registration will automatically transfer to the new meeting weekend in September. If you need to cancel or make changes to your registration, please contact SCPA anytime between now and Sept. 9.
If you are not currently registered and would like to attend the Annual Meeting, please register by Sept. 9.
If you booked a room through SCPA’s block at The Marina Inn, your reservation has been automatically transferred to the new September weekend dates. You fall into this group if you entered the SC PRESS discount code online or called the hotel and mentioned you are a part of our group. Transferring ensures you get a room in our block for the new dates. If you need to change or cancel your reservation for the new September meeting dates, call the hotel at (843) 913-1333. You’ll have until Sept. 11, 2020 to make changes/cancel without penalty.
If you booked a room at The Marina Inn outside of our block (through their main website or a third-party site like Expedia), YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR YOUR MARCH RESERVATION IF YOU DO NOT CANCEL. Your reservation will NOT be automatically transferred to the new date. Please call the hotel as soon as possible to cancel your reservation for the weekend of March 20-21: (843) 913-1333.
If you did not book a room in our block or have already canceled your reservation from our block, there are likely rooms available at the discounted group rate of $124 for the September meeting dates. Contact Ashley at The Marina Inn to see if rooms are available: 843.913.2849 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you are unsure about how you made your reservation, or if you have one, play it safe and call the hotel to check: (843) 913-1333.

Connect. Learn. Celebrate.
You don’t want to miss seeing 350 SCPA friends at our 2020 SCPA Annual Meeting and Awards, presented by AT&T. Make plans to join us Sept. 18-19, 2020, at the beautiful Marina Inn at Grande Dunes in Myrtle Beach for awards presentations, educational sessions and networking.
Our meeting is a time to celebrate the Palmetto State’s commitment to outstanding journalism! Come have a good time and get re-energized about the important work you do to serve your readers every day. You can even bring your family for a mini-vacation at the beach!
This year’s convention will feature three awards ceremonies – the Weekly and Associate Member Awards Luncheon, the Daily Awards Dinner and a Collegiate Awards ceremony on Saturday afternoon. In addition to the presentation of nearly 850 awards, the Annual Meeting will offer top-notch training:
- P.J. Browning and team will lead a discussion on our industry’s changing business models and talk about The Post and Courier’s mini-publisher initiative that generated almost $900,000 in new product revenue and increased digital subscriptions by 250 percent. If you’re looking for new ways to grow revenue and mobilize your editorial and sales teams, this is a must-attend session.
- Vince Johnson and The Sumter Item’s leadership team will be on hand to talk about the disruptive, game-changing moves they’re making to adapt and better serve readers and advertisers. These include the creation of a video production company, the revamping of Sumter’s annual readers’ choice awards and the creation of new email newsletters and digital products.
- Counselors Off the Cuff – panel of media law experts discussing First Amendment, open government and legal issues affecting S.C. journalists
- Daily Editors Roundtable Luncheon (for Executive and Managing Editors and other newsroom leaders)
- Collegiate Member Roundtables on writing, editing/management and design/photography
All sessions and networking events are free and open to all SCPA members, but tickets are required to meal and awards functions.
We’ll kick off the meeting Friday night with a BBQ party at the Historic Myrtle Beach Train Depot. Join us for good food, drinks and fun!
The deadline to register is Sept. 9.
