General Excellence Winners
Under 5,000: The Patriot, Francis Marion University
Over 5,000: The Tiger, Clemson University
Under 5,000 Journalist of the Year
Mitchell Mercer
The Bluestocking
Presbyterian College
In the Under 5,000 Division, this journalist’s adviser notes she has never met anyone quite like her nominee. The journalist is focused, determined, fiendishly productive, while also maintaining a stance in his personal and professional interactions that is thoughtful, kind and genuinely helpful. In large ways and small, his rare combination of qualities—the driven journalist who nonetheless has a gentle touch—gets the job done and also warms the heart.
To say this journalist wears many hats is an understatement. He’s served as sports writer, columnist, sports editor and currently as editor-in-chief of The Bluestocking, as well as station manager for WPCX, video producer for the BlueTube station and he also hosts a sports podcast. He’s written for his hometown newspaper, worked as a stringer for a local sports website and interned at SCETV. Plus, he’s participated in other student organizations, all while staying on the Dean’s List. Mitchell Mercer has set the bar high in terms of elevated standards and tireless professionalism, and he’s made a real difference at Presbyterian College. His portfolio demonstrates range, skills and talent, and judges know with certainty that Mercer has a bright future in journalism!
Over 5,000 Journalist of the Year
David Ferrara
The Tiger
Clemson University
This year’s recipient leads a staff of 40 by example and demonstrates solid, ethical journalism and a passion for his craft. Despite the challenges of COVID-19, he kept his staff connected and readers engaged through both traditional and new platforms. In addition to impressive multiplatform storytelling and speaking truth to power, he developed an operations model that will be used for years to come. He also grew ad revenue, developed partnerships with other student media groups, organized staff training from industry professionals and renovated the newsroom. He’s a tenacious reporter who works to capture the heart and soul of people through storytelling. Without a doubt, David Ferrara’s dedication, talents, leadership, hard work and commitment have led to The Tiger’s success and today we recognize him with this top honor.
